PANAJI: Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday stated the Portuguese, who dominated Goa for over 400 years, had looted it.
“Goa was not poor, however was wealthy, and that’s they (the Portuguese) got here right here. Whereas ruling Goa for 400 years, it will not be mistaken to say that they looted it. Goa was blessed with iron ore and different pure assets. I’m not going into these particulars,” Sawant stated whereas talking at a perform organised to launch ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ programmes at Fort Aguada, Sinquerim.
Whereas claiming that the fort was “constructed by the Dutch within the twelfth century”, the chief minister stated that another useful initiatives had come up round that point, together with the Goa Medical Faculty and the Goa Pharmacy Faculty, each of which have been Asia’s first. “The primary lighthouse in Asia too was erected at Aguada in 1874,” he stated. “Meaning Goa was not poor. It was wealthy.”
By the way, Fort Aguada and the lighthouse inside it, the Goa Medical Faculty, and the Goa Pharmacy Faculty have been all constructed by the Portuguese throughout their rule in Goa.
